Causes: People may use alcohol as a way of relaxing, coping with trauma, or numbing painful feelings. If this becomes a habit you might become addicted to alcohol and feel unable to cope with life when sober. Effects: You will feel a strong urge to drink. If your body becomes dependent on alcohol you will experience withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop, like sweating, nausea, agitation and shaking. Stopping suddenly can be fatal. Alcoholism may also cause hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver, certain cancers, inflammation of the stomach and pancreas, high blood pressure, brain damage, heart failure, accidents due to being drunk, financial problems, loss of employment and relationship break-ups. Solutions: Do not stop drinking suddenly. Talk to your doctor about starting a detox program. Think about why you started drinking heavily and address problems in your life. Group therapy. Psychotherapy. Medications such as Antabuse, which change the way your body reacts to alcohol and may help you give up. Discuss this anonymously in the Alcoholics Forum >>
Just for today: Alcoholism
Just for today I will accept that I have alcoholism problems, with the realisation that the more I wish that i do not have the problem, the worse I make it.
As of today, I will understand that my alcoholism problem can be beaten, if I learn to 'practise opposites'.
Just for today I will make a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from two pests: hurry and indecision.
Just for today I will pass on to other members of therapy247, what I have learned about dealing with alcoholism.
Just for today I will share my alcoholism experience with other members of therapy247.
Just for today I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle all my alcoholism problems at once. I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
Just for today I will be happy. This assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.
Just for today I will adjust myself to what is, and not try to adjust everything to my own desires. I will take my luck as it comes, and fit myself to it.
Just for today I will try to strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.
Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn, and not get found out; if anybody knows of it, it will not count. I will do at least two things I don't want to do just for exercise. I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt; they may be hurt, but today I will not show it.
Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, keep my voice low, be courteous, criticize not one bit. I won't find fault with anything, nor try to improve or regulate anybody but myself.
Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. During this half hour, sometime, I will try to get a better perspective of my life and alcoholism problem.
Just for today I will be unafraid of my alcoholism problem. Especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe that as I give to the world, so the world will give to me.

To conquer self defeating behaviour we need some form of order or path to follow. The A's are a good way of centering the behaviour and our thinking >>
